Ingredients

Instructions

  1. To a small saucepan (1 quart), add coconut milk (or almond milk), turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, pepper, and coconut oil. Whisk to combine ingredients, then on medium heat, bring to a simmer (do not boil) stirring occasionally. Simmer on low heat for 1 minute.
  2. Remove from heat, and add maple syrup and vanilla. Using a whisk or milk frother, combine, and froth until you reach the desired amount of foam. Pour into a 12 ounce mug, garnish with a little extra cinnamon (optional), and enjoy!

Notes

  1. If you prefer a strong taste of turmeric, you can use up to ½ teaspoon ground turmeric. However, keep in mind that this quantity will give the latte a more medicinal taste.
  2. Coconut oil or ghee are traditionally used in turmeric milk tea (another name for golden milk or turmeric latte). Although you can make this Golden Milk Latte without the coconut oil, this small amount gives it a much richer flavor and has some health benefits, as well.
  3. To learn about some of the health benefits of this Golden Milk Latte, visit the Blog Comments & Tips for this recipe on the website.
  4. This recipe can be doubled or more, and made ahead of time. Just make as directed, then allow to cool completely before transferring to an airtight Mason jar, and store refrigerated for up to 3 days. Then shake vigorously just before using. For an iced Golden Milk latte, just pour over ice. Or, warm it up in the microwave or on the stovetop for a cozy cup of this turmeric latte.
  5. Makes one 8 ounce serving (11-12 ounces with froth).

How to Make this Quick and Easy Golden Milk Latte!

Blog Comments & Tips

A deliciously healthy warm drink for winter!

This warm and cozy Golden Milk Latte is the perfect drink during cold weather months. That said, it can be served either hot or cold depending on your preference. This wonderful dairy free recipe is made with a blend of coconut milk (or almond milk), turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, a smidgen of black pepper, vanilla, coconut oil, and sweetened with pure maple syrup (or honey).

This Golden Milk Latte recipe may have been modernized, but it uses all the traditional ingredients to make it authentic. Also known as turmeric latte or turmeric milk tea, Golden milk originated in India and is traditionally made with whole dairy milk. The modern versions of golden milk often include vanilla for flavor and swap out the dairy with plant based milk, like almond milk or coconut milk. Since whole fat dairy milk is not used in this recipe, I added a touch of coconut oil to “activate” some of the other fat soluble ingredients. As another modern twist to make this golden milk recipe quick and easy, I used ground spices instead of whole spices.

Along with its taste, this delightful plant based beverage is enjoyed by many for its health benefits.

  • Anti-Inflammatory: The combination of turmeric, ginger, black pepper, and coconut oil team up to provide a powerhouse of anti-inflammatory properties. The presence of this tiny amount of black pepper increases the effects of the turmeric by 2000%! The addition of coconut oil promotes better absorption of the turmeric because both piperine and curcumin are fat soluble.

  • Immune Boost: The combination of spices, particularly turmeric and ginger, is known for their immune-boosting properties.

  • Digestive Health: Ginger and cardamom contribute to digestive health, promoting better gut health!

  • Antioxidants: Turmeric and cinnamon are rich in antioxidants, combating free radicals and supporting overall cell health.

  • Heart-Friendly: Cinnamon and turmeric may contribute to heart health by helping manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The MCTs in coconut oil are said to contribute to heart health by supporting healthy cholesterol levels and promoting cardiovascular well-being.

  • Nourishing Nutrients: Coconut milk or almond milk add a dose of healthy fats. The healthy fats in coconut oil can also contribute to skin hydration and may have beneficial effects on skin health when consumed regularly.

  • No Refined Sugars: Pure maple syrup or honey provide natural sweetness without refined sugars.

How do you ensure the best results from this recipe?

My 5 tips to making a Golden Milk Latte:

  1. Traditionally, golden milk is made with dairy milk; however, you could use any milk you like (dairy or non dairy). I’ve made this recipe with both almond milk and coconut milk, but prefer the taste and texture of coconut milk in this recipe. I like using Trader Joe's unsweetened coconut milk beverage (another brand that works well is Pacific Foods vanilla unsweetened organic coconut plant based beverage). If you prefer using almond milk, I like Blue Diamond Almond Breeze unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Or you can try a blend of the two milks (I like Almond Breeze dairy free unsweetened vanilla almond coconut milk blend).

  2. Make sure your spices are fresh, not only for their flavor but their health benefits.

  3. Bring the ingredients to a simmer, but DO NOT BOIL. Turn down the heat, and simmer on low for only 1 minute to allow the ground spices to dissolve into the milk.

  4. I like to froth my Golden Milk when it’s hot, but you can certainly opt not to froth. Just make sure you whisk it well to combine everything.

  5. Serve it with a spoon, as all the spices may settle at the bottom if you don’t froth it.

It’s time to customize and Pimp My Recipe.

Pimp My Recipe:

  • Make it with Dairy: Whole dairy milk is traditionally used in turmeric milk tea (another name for golden milk or turmeric latte). Just use 1 cup of whole dairy milk instead of dairy free milk.

  • Make it with Ghee: Ghee or coconut oil are traditionally used in this drink. If you prefer using ghee, I recommend using 4th & Heart original grass-fed ghee.

  • Make it with Vegan Ghee: Replace the coconut oil with ¼ teaspoon Livlo organic vegan ghee

  • Make it Keto: With the exception of the pure maple syrup, this Golden Milk Latte is keto friendly. To substitute the maple syrup, replace it with 1 ½ packets of stevia (which is equivalent to about 1 tablespoon of regular sugar or equivalent to about 2 teaspoons of maple syrup).

  • Make it with Other Nut Milks: I feel that coconut milk or almond milk taste the best in this recipe, but you can certainly swap them out with your favorite nut milk.

  • Make it Iced: Just make as directed, then allow to cool completely before transferring to an airtight Mason jar. Just before using, shake vigorously and pour over ice.

  • Make it Ahead of Time: Just make as directed, then allow to cool completely before transferring to an airtight Mason jar, and store refrigerated for up to 3 days. Just before using, shake vigorously and pour over ice, or warm it up in the microwave (or on the stovetop) for a cozy cup of this turmeric latte.

Footnote: Remember to stay by the stove and control the heat to prevent the milk from boiling. You only want it to simmer on low heat for 1 minute.
